We pay tribute to one of South Africa's greatest but sometimes forgotten heroes of the struggle for freedom.

Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe is arguably one of the less documented freedom fighters in South Africa. As a leader of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), Sobukwe led from the forefront in the anti-pass campaign which resulted in the infamous 21 March 1960 Sharpeville massacre, in which 69 people died. His famous quote: 'There is only one race. The human race.' resonates in us the very essence for which he stood for, a non-racial future rather than a multi-racial one.

He would have been 92 years old today.

castro
This revolutionary icon will forever be remembered for his contribution to South Africa and Africa as a whole.

His death is a loss not limited to Cuba or a particular ideology, but Castro led the oppressed and the striving from the front and stood up to every attempt at stifling the voice of freedom. His contribution and unflinching support for South Africa’s cause on various fora will always remain deeply etched in the minds and hearts of the South African people.

South Africa and Cuba have maintained longstanding relations dating back to the struggle against apartheid and colonialism in the sub region of Africa, in whose defeat Cuba played a vital role.
