OVERVIEW OF THE PARK
Freedom Park mourns the passing of one of its great and respected liberation stalwart, Philip Kgosana.
Philip Kgosana was a leader whose personal attributes and character will live on as an inspiration to all of us. He served this country selflessly all his life as a former student leader and PAC activist. He was best known for mobilising students in the anti-pass protests during the ‘60s.
24 years ago a great giant fell. We remember the indomitable courage and sacrifice of Chris Hani and we salute this brave martyr.
A culture of service and tolerance: These were the lessons from Chris Hani. As one of the greatest poets in human history wrote: “Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that gives flowers, not thunder.”
On the morning of 06 April 1979, Mahlangu, a heroic son of our people and dedicated member of the African National Congress was executed by the white minority racist regime.
Comrade Mahlangu, a young hero of the South African revolutionary struggle, a survivor of the Soweto and other massacres perpetrated throughout the country by the fascist regime in 1976, a dedicated opponent of racism, Apartheid and colonial domination, was hanged in Pretoria at 6 a.m. on Friday, April 6th, 1979.
"Tell my people that i love them and that they must continue the struggle. My blood will nourish the tree that will bear the fruits of freedom. Aluta Continua!"
- Solomon Mahlangu -
