September marks Heritage and Tourism Month celebrations in South Africa and this year’s theme is in line with government’s programme to celebrate the centenary year of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu.
Heritage Month 2018 will be commemorated under the theme “The Year of Nelson Mandela: Advancing Transformation of South Africa’s Heritage Landscape”. At the centre of the 2018 Heritage Month celebrations will be the transformation of the heritage landscape, and in particular, the contribution made by former President Nelson Mandela.
During government’s launch, a month-long programme of activities aimed at addressing issues of transformations, promotion and preservation of South Africa’s rich and diverse heritage, national identity, nation building and social cohesion will be unveiled.
Here at Freedom Park, we will invite the public to walk between the Wall of Names and look at the rows of names. Each name represents a legacy, a history, a life story. Our South African heritage is a proud, poignant and often painful one. But it is also one that speaks of triumph, perseverance and what we can accomplish as South Africans.
