The 2018 16 Days of Activism campaign was launched yesterday under theme:#HearMeToo: End Violence against Women and Children.
South Africa boasts hosts of legislation and policies that affirm the rights of all including women and children. These rights do not necessarily translate into reality in the lives of people who still face systemic and endemic forms of violence. More than half of women murdered in South Africa are killed by their intimate partners; and women and gender non-conforming people remain over-represented amongst the hungry, homeless and the poor.
Imagine if, for 16 days, there was no rape, no child abuse. The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign challenges South Africans to declare a truce on violence against women and children – and, ultimately, to make it a permanent one.
This campaign will run from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) through to International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
