Reminder: 2016 INKOSI ALBERT LUTHULI ORAL HISTORY PROGRAMME CELEBRATES HEROES AND HEROINES OF THE LIBERATION STRUGGLE

The 2016 edition of the iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History programme is on and this year will see the learners rub shoulders with the South African liberation stalwarts such as Sophie de Bryn and Dan Sechaba Montsitsi. The theme for 2016 is aligned to the “Honouring our Heroes and heroines programme” of Freedom Park which aims to honour the heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History is a culmination of an enormous collective effort of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and South African History Online (SAHO) which began in 2005. The learners, educators, district and provincial coordinators and adjudicators contributed tremendously in making the iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History competition a great success over the years.

The aim of the programme is to educate the youth about the injustices of the past and the valuable lessons that can be learnt. This programme also empowers learners in conducting oral history research, with an array of skills developed in the process which includes data collection, organization of data, data analysis as well as report writing which proves valuable beyond ones school years.

The programme creates an opportunity for learners not only to gain knowledge on the values shared within their communities but also to afford them opportunities to become catalysts of change. The programme honours the liberation struggle heroes and heroines whilst raising awareness about the role they played to liberate our country from the precipice of apartheid destructions.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme is scheduled to take place from the5th October at 14h00 to 6th October 2016 at Freedom Park. Winners will be announced at an award winning ceremony on the evening of Thursday, 06 October 2016 at Freedom Park.
