LIBERATION STRUGGLE HEROES CELEBRATED THROUGH THE 2017 INKOSI ALBERT LUTHULI ORAL HISTORY PROGRAMME

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History programme 2017 edition will celebrate the anniversaries of South African struggle heroes and will see learners unearthing the untold and forgotten stories of our struggle heroes. Participating learners and teachers who competed successfully in their provincial elimination rounds will compete at the national finals taking place from 30 September – 01 October 2017 at the DBE Conference Centre in Pretoria.

The 2017 topics for iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History programme are based on the centenary celebrations of Oliver Reginald Tambo’s 100 years of age, 30 years of the South African Railway and Harbour Workers Union (SARHWU), 50th commemoration of the passing of Chief Albert Luthuli and 40th commemoration of the passing of Steve Bantu Biko.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History is a culmination of an enormous collective effort of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and South African History Online (SAHO) which began in 2005. It was introduced in 2005 by the DBE as part of the promotion of oral history and it is a contribution to the strengthening of the teaching and learning of History in schools. The aim of the programme to educate the youth about the injustices of the past and the valuable lessons that can be drawn from it and empowers learners in conducting oral history research.

The iNkosi Albert Luthuli Oral History Programme is scheduled to take place from the 29 September – 02 October 2017 with learners and educators presenting their projects in parallel sessions on the 30 September 2017 to 01 October 2017 at 222 Struben Street, Conference Centre, in Pretoria. . Winners will be announced at an award winning and gala dinner ceremony on the evening of Sunday, 01 October 2017 at Freedom Park.
