The Rise of South Africa’s Middle Class – Myths and Realities: A Seminar Taking Place at Freedom Park.

Freedom Park and the Nordic Africa’s Institute as well as the embassies of Sweden and Finland and Freedom Park will on 9 November 2017 hold a seminar on the Rise of South Africa’s Middle Class- Myths and Realities.

The purpose of the seminar is to elicit and engage in intensive discussion on the notion of Middle Class in a South African context. The seminar also seeks to strive, amid challenging contextual parameters, to provide possible answers that could perhaps deepen our understanding of the central role of the Middle Class in the post-apartheid South African Society in relation to the questions of economic growth, inequality poverty and gender.

Speakers from the universities of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Pretoria, UNISA, Walter Sisulu, Rhodes as well as the Thabo Mbeki Foundation will deliver papers. Some of the topics that will be deliberated upon include : The Anatomy of the South African Middle Class; Mapping the South African Middle Class; Middle Class Gender and Development: Nordic Experiences- Lesson for South Africa.
