JOINTLY ISSUED BY THE LIMPOPO SPORT, ARTS & CULTURE DEPARTMENT & FREEDOM PARK
DATE: 27 APRIL 2017
THE UNVEILING OF THE INSCRIPTION OF NAMES OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS FROM LIMPOPO.
As part of the continued commemoration of the political freedom attained by the people of South Africa, LIMPOPO MEC for Sport, Arts & Culture Onicca Moloi, together with some of the related families, will officially unveil the names of freedom fighters, inscribed on the WALL OF NAMES at Freedom Park in Pretoria on Friday 28 April 2017.
Limpopo province, because of its strategic location as the gateway into the rest of the continent, was used as a major path through which freedom fighters exited and entered the country. The northernmost province was also used as a recruitment base of combatants who underwent military training to fight the apartheid regime.
The official ceremony will be held at the FREEDOM PARK, an entity of the national Department of Arts & Culture, located in Salvakop in the capital city.
In order to preserve our rich political heritage, FREEDOM PARK has inscribed the innumerable names of the people who fought for political emancipation, to ensure that they are always remembered.
Among them are the names of men and women who originate from the Limpopo Province. They include one of the founding leaders of the ANC Sefako Makgato, activist Josias Madzunya, Rivonia Trialist Elias Motsoaledi, MK combatant Flag Boshielo etc.
The unveiling of these inscribed names forms part of the plans by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts & Culture to preserve the liberation heritage resources including artifacts and the creation of an inventory that will contain the stories of all our struggle icons.
The event starts at 9am on Friday 28 April 2017.
Members of the media are invited to attend.
