Deputy Minister Sotyu to lead Africa Month activations at Freedom Park
The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Mms Maggie Sotyu will today, 03 May 2018 lead Africa Month activation to kick-start the month-long programme of activities at Freedom Park in Pretoria under the theme, “The Year of Nelson Mandela: Building a Better Africa and a Better World!.
The activation amongst others serves as a platform to celebrate our African Identity and promote nation building and social cohesion, cultural exchange, integration, unity and solidarity within the continent.
Presented in a form of African village, the event will also showcase some of the most exciting local and African fashion, African food, traditional beer, décor as well as other craft and textiles through exhibitions from the continent, in order to create markets and networks amongst designers and creatives in particular.
The Month of May has been declared Africa Month, to celebrate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963, it was on this date that 25 May was declared as Africa Day as a symbol of unity amongst all Africans.
Africa Month is conceptualised within the context of several policies and legislative instruments that guide what South Africa wants to achieve domestically and internationally. In this regard, the principles of the National Development Plan 2030 and Outcome 11 and 14 of the Medium Term Strategy Framework (MTSF) objectives become the pillars of Africa Month.
