Lessons from South Africa’s Women Icons

The Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke Institute (CMMI) in partnership with Freedom Park, National Heritage Council (NHC) and Sisulu Foundation are proud to announce an initiative to celebrate and honour Mme Charlotte Makgomo Mannya-Maxeke, Mama Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu and Mama Winnie Madikizela- Mandela 

The Dialogue will feature prominent women and men within our society in conversation on the Lessons imparted by these Women Icons and how we can turn these teachings into practical solutions to some of our challenges as a society. 

This initiative is hugely influenced and echoing Mme Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke words, when she said, "This work is not for yourselves, kill that spirit of self and do not live above your people but live with them and if you can rise, bring someone with you."

MME CHARLOTTE MANNYA-MAXEKE 

In memory of Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke and the enormous contributions she made to both South Africans and International community, we are convening these Dialogues to celebrate her achievements; preserve her legacy; promote her teachings; advance the values she stood for and elevate her name especially as we are at centenary milestone of ANCWL, Mama Albertina Sisulu and our first democratic elected President of South Africa, President Nelson Mandela.

  • She was a first black woman to graduate and have a BSC Degree in Southern Africa in 1901
  • First woman to participate in the Kings Courts under King Sabata Dalindyebo of AbaThembu and they started a school under this Royal Family. She was given a name Nogazo as a salutation
  • She established a school in Evaton, Gauteng in 1908 (Wilberforce Institute)
  • She was the only woman that attended the first (African National Congress) ANC conference in 1912 and she made some momentous contributions.
  • Initiator, Organizer and the first President of Bantu Women’s League in 1918 which later became ANC Women’s League.
