The National Poet Laureate Hub hosts a conference to address the way forward for Poetry in Africa and the Diaspora. Veteran Professor Mongane Wally Serote, South Africa’s National Poet Laureate and global phenomenon in African literature will be hosting a conference on the 13th November 2020 at Freedom Park Heritage Site in Pretoria. The event starts at 10h00.
Some of Professor Serote’s responsibilities as a Poet Laureate include the elevation of poetry in the country and providing more accessibility to the art form. It is because of that he has founded an organization called The National Poetry Laureate Hub in Motion which aims to be a repository for knowledge about poetry and its integration with other artforms.
The objective of the conference is to gather elders and some youth members who have a significant contribution to South African literature and construct a way forward for poetry in the continent and Diaspora. Multiple performances from the youth will be showcased and the conference will include a tour around Freedom Park.
Like many other industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected the arts and this conference intends to discover solutions to reconfiguring and reconstructing South Africa’s hope for freedom in arts.
