Freedom Park Chief Executive officer, Jane Mufamadi, will on the evening of the 26 November 2020 host a special Gala Dinner for invited stakeholders in celebration of the organization’s 20-year anniversary. The year 2020 marks 20 years since the organization was established.
In 1999, former President Nelson Mandela said “the day should not be far off, when we shall have a people’s shrine, a Freedom Park, where we shall honour with all the dignity they deserve, those who endured pain so we should experience the joy of freedom.” That pronouncement led to the civic consultations, conceptualisation and the construction of Freedom Park, a National Heritage Site. It was therefore, not surprising that Mandela also became a Patron in Chief of the organisation.
Since Freedom Park’s inception, numerous milestones, have been achieved, such as being voted one of the 10 architecturally striking museums of the world, by Visi Magazine in 2016; being voted the best heritage site in Pretoria, by Pretoria news readers; being an institution, that has received most world leaders, more than any other likeminded institution in the country; inscribed more than 140 000 names on the Wall of Names, of the heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of our country.
The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Mr Nathi Mthethwa is expected to attend, high ranking government officials, embassies representatives, tourism and heritage sectors, academics, business are expected to attend. Storytellers, poets and musicians will entertain the guests. The CEO is expected to provide a synopsis on what transpired in 20 years of Freedom Park, a National Heritage Site’s existence.
