In its continued efforts to preserve, protect and promote the country’s liberation heritage, the National Heritage Council (NHC) together with Freedom Park have partnered with the Le Rona Re Batho Memorial Trust to host the inaugural Maseru Massacres Memorial Lecture - in commemoration and honour of the victims and survivors of the 1982 and 1985 Maseru Massacres.

Freedom Park, a National Heritage Site in Pretoria, allows women to enter free of charge on National Women’s Day, 9th August; in commemoration of the heroic 1956 women’s March,  to the Union Buildings. The women were protesting the discriminatory and repressive pass laws of the apartheid government. The more than 20 000 women protesters, from different walks of life, have left an indelible mark in the struggle for gender equality and human rights. Freedom Park together with government, salute the bravery and the determination of the 1956 women, who led the historic march under the theme: “Accelerating socio-economic opportunities for the empowerment of women”.
