5th November marked the birthday of anti-apartheid stalwart Laloo Chiba. He would have been 91.
The former Umkhonto we Sizwe platoon commander was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment on Robben Island in the Little Rivonia Trial. He was jailed in B-Section, alongside Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada and others. He was also a former parliamentarian and served on, amongst others, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, where he earned the reputation of being an uncompromising public representative. He was also a former Board member of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
Today in 1964, Vuyisile Mini, Wilson Khayinga and Zinakile Mkaba sang their last song before they were hanged at the Pretoria Central Prison. They were arrested and charged for political crimes by the apartheid regime. They were the first MK soldiers to be hanged.
